State-owned power utility Eskom reiterates that all registration and connection fees of up to R10 000 for small-scale embedded solar systems up to 50 kVA, are waived until March 31.

The Electricity Regulation Act requires all systems under 100 kVA to be registered with the network service provider, namely Eskom or municipalities, and comply with grid code requirements, Eskom says.

The vast majority of residential systems are under 50 kVA, it points out.

Specifically, households and businesses with a solar system under 50 kVA need to submit a small-scale embedded generation (SSEG) system installation test report, although there is 12-month grace period after registration, an electrical wiring certificate of compliance and an inverter test certificate to register it.

Registration of SSEG systems is commonplace worldwide and helps ensure a home or business is safe, technicians are protected when working on the network and the community electricity supply remains reliable, Eskom says.

It is working with key national organisations to simplify and harmonise SSEG rules across the country, it adds.

The institutions it is working with include the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL), the Southern African Association of Municipal Electricity Utilities, the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association, the Electrical Conformance Board and the Electrical Contractors Association of South Africa.

Since October 1, 2025, residential customers may now have their systems signed off by a DEL-registered person, excluding single-phase testers. This follows a review of compliance and safety requirements and a stringent due diligence process, pending the expected changes by the SABS of wiring standards, Eskom says.

Customers can also use the utility's online registration tool, found on its website, to get more details.
